How To Bid

Q: How do I bid?
A: When you find something that you want, look for the bid box (titled "Place a Bid") on the auction page.

Enter the bid: The amount you are willing to pay for the car.

Preview your bid.

Click on "Preview Bid." Once you've previewed your bid and confirmed that everything is in order, click on "Place this Bid." This is the final step to submitting your bid.

Bid confirmation.

Once you have submitted your bid, you'll get one of the following confirmation messages:

High bid confirmation: If your bid is the highest, you'll be notified of this fact by email

Outbid confirmation: Another bidder might have placed a bid using automatic bidding, in which case an updated bid was placed on their behalf and you were automatically outbid. If this happens and you want to bid again, return to the auction page and enter a higher amount.

Monitor the auction.
As you wait for the auction to close, you'll receive notifications if you've been outbid. You can always return to the auction and enter a higher bid. You can monitor all your auction activity by clicking on the "Buying Activity" link in the left side on any auctions page.

Contact the seller.
When the auction closes and you're the high bidder, you'll get an email. Included in this email is the seller's contact information. You should email the seller to arrange for payment and shipping of the item.

Q: Can I cancel my bid?
A: After you place a bid on the auction item page, you'll be taken to a Preview Bid page. You can cancel your bid while on this preview page. Simply click on the "Cancel" button, and the bid won't be placed.

You cannot cancel your bid after you've confirmed it (i.e., after you have clicked on "Place This bid"). Please don't bid on an item if you're uncertain that you can pay for it

Q: What is a reserve price?
A: The reserve price is the lowest price the seller is willing to accept for the auction item.
When posting an auction, a seller sets a starting price. This amount is usually low, allowing the seller to attract bidders who then drive up the price naturally, by placing bids.

The seller can also choose to set a reserve price. This price is higher than the starting price. If the reserve price isn't met by the close of the auction, the item won't be sold. Neither the bidder nor the seller will be under obligation to complete the sale, and no contact information will be exchanged.

If an auction has a reserve price that hasn't yet been met, this information will be listed in the auction page.

A seller usually specifies a reserve price if he/she is unsure of the real value of an item and wants to reserve the right to not sell if the market value is less than expected.

You can find the reserve price on an auction by asking the seller a question in the Question & Answer section. Please remember that it's at the seller's discretion if they wish to reveal the auction's reserve price.

Q: What is the buy price?
A: The buy price is the price at which a seller is willing to close their auction immediately and sell their item. If a bidder offers a bid equal to the auction's buy price, that bidder automatically wins the auction. However, the buy price doesn't have to be met in order for an auction to close with a sale.

Q: How does the Automatic bidding work?
A: Automatic bidding places bids on your behalf at the current increment. Simply enter your maximum bid (the highest amount you are willing to pay), and click the "Preview Bid" button, then confirm it on the confirmation page.

The goal of automatic bidding is for you to win the auction at the lowest possible price. Your maximum bid is only placed when another bidder also bids up to that amount or when the reserve price is equal to or greater than your maximum bid.

Bids will increase based on the bid increment set for the auction. Therefore, the current bid will equal the former bid plus the bid increment.
