multilink suspension An independent rear suspension design in which multiple control arms guide the wheels’ motion
Typically, “multi” refers to four or five hinged control arms, or links, per wheel. Generally credited to Mercedes-Benz, the multilink design is a complex approach to controlling the angle and position of a vehicle’s rear wheels over the course of their suspension travel. Its handling performance is theoretically superior to that of simpler designs in the area of controlling the vehicle’s rear end, particularly during aggressive maneuvers such as braking during a sharp turn.
That said, different companies favor different engineering approaches from bumper to bumper, and real-world differences are often subtle. We recommend that shoppers test-drive several competing vehicles and form opinions based on their experience rather than on the nuts and bolts. |
